The Adi Parva (Book of the Beginning) and Sabha Parva (Book of the Assembly Hall) are the first and second of the eighteen major books of the Indian epic Mahabharata. Together, they cover the origin and genealogy of the Kuru dynasty, the birth and early life of the Pandavas and Kauravas, the building of Indraprastha, and the fateful game of dice that triggers their exile.
Adi Parva: The Book of Beginnings
- The Frame Story: Details how sage Vaisampayana recites the epic to King Janamejaya during a snake sacrifice, which is later retold by the storyteller Sauti to sages in the Naimisha Forest.

Sabha Parva: The Book of the Assembly Hall
- Indraprastha & Maya's Hall: Describes the construction of a magnificent royal assembly hall by the celestial architect Maya Danava for the Pandavas in their new capital, Indraprastha.
- Rajasuya Yajna: Details Yudhishthira performing the great imperial sacrifice after military conquests by the four Pandava brothers, establishing their supreme sovereignty.
- Slaying of Jarasandha: Features Krishna, Bhima, and Arjuna traveling to Magadha to eliminate King Jarasandha, enabling the sacrifice.
- The Game of Dice: Shows Duryodhana’s deep envy, leading to a rigged game of dice planned by Shakuni. Yudhishthira loses his kingdom, wealth, brothers, and Draupadi, resulting in her public humiliation and the 12-year exile of the Pandavas.
